ES Lighting, located at the corner of Seventh and Connecticut, is a unique business in today's world of big-box, do-it-yourself stores. Locally owned ES Lighting offers what the big stores don't: personal service and wide variety. Buying from over 100 lighting vendors allows ES Lighting to offer styles from traditional, transitional, casual, contemporary, mid-century modern to one-of-a-kind custom manufactured items hand forged in the good old USA.
Siblings Grant and Michelle operate the business that was started in 1964 by their grandparents, Harriet and Andrew Lechtenberg. Andy Lechtenberg had been a lighting salesman and representative and decided Lawrence could use its own electrical house and he was the man to do it. The original store was located in a historic home at 1011 Vermont Street. The couple lived above the shop with the electrical warehouse being located in the two car detached garage, back porch and dining room with offices in an old drawing room. The parlor or front room was Lawrence's first lighting showroom.
In 1972 Michael Lechtenberg purchased the business from his parents who were ready to retire, and in 1978 relocated ES Lighting to Sixth and Massachusetts. The Lawrence Journal-World eventually acquired that space for expansion, and the showroom once again relocated to its current location in 1988. Originally called Electric Supply Inc., the business changed names when it evolved from general electrical supplies to specifically a lighting showroom. Today ES Lighting offers lighting consultations to contractors, builders, DIY remodelers, and anyone else who needs fixtures for indoor, outdoor, residential or commercial applications.
Although light fixtures make up the largest part of its inventory, ES Lighting also sells door and bath hardware, along with lampshades while specializing in lamp repairs.
